Tips on How to Remove a Popcorn Ceiling Faster and Easier
Before you learn how to perform popcorn texture removal on ceilings, scrape a small area before you commit to prepping the room. Try a dry test first, then dampen it with some water and try again. Some texture comes off without water, however, in most cases, wetting is more effective. In the event the water doesn’t soak into the texture to soften it, the ceiling will have been painted. In that case, wetting the ceiling will not help. You will need to decide whether you want to tackle an arduous scraping job or hide your popcorn ceiling using sheetrock.
Remove Ceiling Fixtures and Fans
Turn off the breaker to any light fixtures and remove them. Leaving lighting and ceiling fans in place seems easier, but they will get in your way and get covered with popcorn scrapings. Plus, you don’t want to spray water on electrical fixtures.
Wet it With a Pump Sprayer
For easier scraping and almost no dust, use a garden sprayer to mist the ceiling. Let it soak for around 15 minutes before scraping. Make sure you only apply a light mist, as too much water may damage the drywall or result in the joint tape loosening. If the texture hasn’t softened after this interval, spray it again and wait another 15 minutes.
If the texture still hasn’t softened, as mentioned above, it may have been painted, or paint was added to the texture before it was applied. In either case, water will not easily penetrate it. If the texture has been painted, you should try a dry scrape first to reveal some of the unpainted texture beneath, and then wet scrape the rest.
